Sabarmati Courtyard Residence
A haveli-inspired central courtyard with a stepped water channel, jaali-filtered shade and a native flowering canopy.
A room without a roof
The client wanted a courtyard that worked as the house's main living space for nine months of the year. We planned it as a room — walls of jaali screen, a floor of local sandstone, and a canopy of flowering trees that closes overhead as it matures.
Cooling without machinery
Shade, a shallow water channel and cross-ventilation through the jaali do the work that mechanical cooling would otherwise do. Three summers after handover the courtyard measures consistently cooler than the rooms that open onto it.
